Species Information

Glowlight Tetra native habitat, distribution, behavior & aquarium compatibility.

Glowlight Tetras originate from the tropical streams, rivers and flood plains of South America. They are a schooling fish species that lives in large groups in the wild, which affords them protection from larger fish species that prey on them. Swimming in large schools provides the Glowlight Tetra with many sets of eyes to look for danger and confuses predator fish as the myriad of reflections from the fishes neon stripes make it difficult to pick out a single fish to attempt to eat.

Along with swimming in large schools, the Glowlight Tetra tends to stay in well planted areas near the river banks. This affords them added protection and serves as a good location in which to find small insects, crustaceans and plant material on which to feed.

Aquarium Care

How to successfully keep Glowlight Tetra in the home aquarium.

When keeping the Glowlight Tetra in the home aquarium, it is best to keep them in groups of 6 or more individuals. Being a schooling fish in nature, they will do much better in the aquarium environment when housed as a group. Glowlight Tetras also need plenty of plants and driftwood to provide them plenty of areas to retreat to when they feel threatened.

Glowlight Tetras are a very peaceful species that should only be kept in peaceful tropical community aquariums with other small to medium sized peaceful community species. They thrive in water that is slightly acidic, with moderate water flow and consistent water parameters. While not considered jumpers, they will jump when startled near the surface, thus a covered aquarium is recommended.

Feeding & Nutrition

How to properly feed Glowlight Tetra and provide a healthy diet.

Glowlight Tetras will readily accept a wide variety of both meaty and plant based foods. They should be fed a varied diet including: high quality flake, micro pellets, tubifex worms, blood worms, brine shrimp and similar commercial foods. Ideally they should be fed 2 to 3 times per day what they will consume within a few minutes.
